2017 Annual Conference on Southeast Asian Studies in Taiwan
ASEAN 50: Subjectivity, Multilateralism and Transboundary in Southeast Asia
Abstract Submission Deadline: February 20, 2017
The 19th Annual Conference on Southeast Asian Studies in Taiwan (ACSEAST) will be held from 2nd to 3rd June 2017 in Puli, Taiwan. The Department of Southeast Asian Studies, National Chi Nan University will host the 2017 ACSEAST Conference in collaboration with the Center for Asia-Pacific Area Studies, RCHSS, Academia Sinica, Taiwan Association of Southeast Asian Studies, and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, National Chi Nan University. The establishment of Southeast Asian Studies in National Chi Nan University, which will be having its 20th anniversary in 2017, has grown significantly in the past two decades and while welcoming our undergraduate freshmen, we are also excited at the recollection of our journey of teaching and research. A series of commemorative activities are going to be taking place along- side the conference. We invite you to join us in Puli, a wonderland with picturesque views and friendly people.
In 2017, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will celebrate its 50th anniversary. At the same time the recently initiated “ASEAN Community 2015” (AC15), which is based on the interrelation of politics, economics and social culture, will be highlighted. However, the intense competition of the international situation challenges how ASEAN places itself with the convergence of globalized capitalism. Furthermore, the Taiwanese government has declared that mutual benefits between the nations of Southeast Asia and Taiwan are expected, although such a path will not be short of obstacles. Academics who devote their time to Southeast Asian studies also have interests and concerns about the “New Southbound Policy,” an initiative of the Government of Taiwan.
The 19th Annual Conference theme is “ASEAN 50: Subjectivity, Multilateralism and Trans-boundary in Southeast Asia.” Under the current situation of ASEAN 50’s development, a t
heme has been established to lead discussions on the issues of Multilateralism and Transboundary, in which agents with various characteristics respond to society as well as pr
esent Subjectivity in Southeast Asia. Moreover, the Subjectivity of Southeast Asian studies during the New Southbound Policy, the suitability of potential new topics and research methods, or even introspection of academic knowledge construction can be topics related to our theme. We welcome a variety of
majors and academics to take the rare opportunity to join our discussion.
